Dear TRIUMF Users,

We would like to bring to your attention a couple of recent improvements to our communications with users that should be of interest to all users and visitors to the laboratory:

1. New weekly beam-delivery-updates mailing list

This mailing list is open to all users interested in keep up to date with ongoing operations and developments in the beam delivery systems at TRIUMF. It covers all experimental program beams at the lab, from proton beams in the meson hall, electron beams with the e-linac, and both stable and radioactive isotope beams at ISAC and ARIEL. It also will include beam schedule updates. The content derives from the weekly report from TRIUMF beam delivery operations to senior management.

The first weekly update (for Week 42) will be sent out today, and each subsequent Tuesday. It is is also copied here below.

If you would like to continue receiving the weekly updates, please register to the mailing list<http://lists.triumf.ca/mailman/listinfo/beam-delivery-updates> at http://lists.triumf.ca/mailman/listinfo/beam-delivery-updates.

The weekly update is a work in progress, and comments and suggestions are welcome.

2. Improved website for Users

The “For Scientific Visitors” website collates all the information needed by users to plan and execute their visits to, and experiments at, TRIUMF. It has been updated to include easy access to the beam schedule, User Liaison contacts, beam-delivery-updates list, and the User Services Newsletters.

Newly included is the “Guide for Experimenters wiki<https://www.triumf.info/wiki/exp-prog/index.php/Main_Page>”. From the wiki: "The purpose of this wiki is to provide all the necessary information to allow a user to propose, plan, and run an experiment at TRIUMF<http://www.triumf.ca/>. It is managed by the Beam Delivery group within the Accelerator Division and is meant to complement the information about TRIUMF's research program<http://www.triumf.ca/research> available on the lab's web site. This wiki is a work in progress. Please forward all comments, queries, and suggestions to delivery at triumf.ca<mailto:delivery at triumf.ca>. "

TRIUMF Beam Delivery Report - Week 42: October 14-20, 2019

Users having any questions or concerns are requested to contact their respective User Liaisons<https://www.triumf.ca/user-liaisons> or contact delivery at triumf.ca<mailto:delivery at triumf.ca>

520 MeV Beam Delivery

  *   Cyclotron Availability: 106.0%
Maintenance Tuesday and 1A/2A3 start-up went quicker than scheduled resulting in extra beamtime and therefore availability for the week was over 100%.
  *   Accumulated Cyclotron Availability for 2019: 93.7%
  * Weekly beam trips (with 2A online): 16
  *   Cyclotron Downtime: 0.8 hours
Highest cause of downtime was RF, resulting in 0.3 hours.
  * Week started with delivery to 2A2/2C4 all week as scheduled. No1B/PIF users. Following Tuesday’s maintenance, beam was delivered to 1A, 2A3, and 2C4 for the remainder of the week.

ISAC Beam Delivery

  * Rubidium-92 from ITW was delivered to the TRINAT experiment last Monday and they took beam until Tuesday morning. This marked the end of the ITW Uranium Carbide #28 target.
  * During Tuesday's maintenance the source was switched over to the east station (containing a Tantalum target). The 2A proton current was stepped up to 40 µA by 3 am on Wednesday. Setup to bNMR followed.
  * On Thursday the recently reconfigured ILE2A1 line was commissioned with beam. The experiments took Lithium-8 through the weekend.
  * Three different controls-related issues last week resulted in a total of 1.5 hours of downtime.
  * Stable beam from the multi-charge ion source was used for development and training activities until Friday evening. A beam consisting of Krypton-80 and Argon-40 was handed off to Operations on Saturday evening for setup to IRIS for a detector test. Setup continued for the balance of the weekend and beam was delivered Monday before noon.
  * Setup to IRIS was delayed 4.7 hours due to issues with a quadrupole in the DTL. The issue was resolved.

E-LINAC

  * High-active water system troubleshooting continued. On Thursday, EGUN high voltage replacement cable was installed and partially tested. SF6 gas in EGUN vessel was circulated through the filter.
  * On Friday, the EGUN:BIAS was ramped up to 150 kV successfully. The JLab beam loss monitor module was removed and controls updated, more controls work required.

Schedule Updates

  * All beam delivery operations are currently on schedule<https://mis.triumf.ca/schedule/view>.
  * ISAC users should note the non-standard maintenance shift from 0830-1630 on Thursday 24th October to accommodate a target module move.
