"Intermission for ATLAS"

Last December, proton beams at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) stopped circulating. For the next two years, the huge machine will be in shutdown mode. For the ATLAS detector, one of the general-purpose particle physics experiments at CERN, this means no new data until 2021. Sounds like a good excuse for a two-year-long vacation? Maybe. And yet, activity around the CERN site and at ATLAS institutes like TRIUMF has continued without pause. So what's going on at the LHC, and in ATLAS in particular, during this intermission? And what can we expect when beams return? This talk will dive into both questions.
