-- TRIUMF Inspires Emerging Canadian Scientists --
TRIUMF awards five Summer Research scholarships to students to take part in
world-leading research

(Vancouver, B.C.) – TRIUMF, Canada's national laboratory for particle and
nuclear physics is taking on five undergraduate students as summer fellows
this June to work at this world-leading research site located at the
University of British Columbia.

Only five students are chosen from across the country each year. Each
successful candidate is offered a scholarship of $2000 and the golden
opportunity to work with internationally-recognized physics researchers who
are pushing the boundaries of science. Students will be working on real
physics challenges, including investigations of the Higgs Boson particle.
This year's students are:

+ Samantha Lloyd, Thompson Rivers University of Kamloops, BC;
+ Hamed Basseri, Ryerson University of Toronto, ON;
+ Nicolas Rey-Le Lorier, L’Université de Montréal of Montreal, QC;
+ Wilson Brenna, University of Saskatchewan of Saskatoon, SK; and
+ Katy Hall, Acadia University of Dartmouth, NS.

"I could not be more excited," said Samantha who is studying general physics
at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. "This is an incredible
opportunity to learn from international scientists who are at the frontiers
in their field. Having access to TRIUMF’s facilities will enable me to
significantly advance my studies and make meaningful contributions to the
ongoing research of how the world was born." TRIUMF's scientists study how
stars evolve, where the precious metals came from, and how this knowledge
can lead to improved medical isotopes.

"TRIUMF is pleased to be providing students with the opportunity to gain
hands-on experience working in the field of physics," said Nigel Lockyer,
Director of TRIUMF. "We strongly believe in the investment of education and
look forward to working with the students this summer."

TRIUMF aims to inspire the next generation of scientists through innovative
educational programs. TRIUMF's student education programs provide
educational exchanges via fellowship and experiential learning opportunities
at the facility for both high-school and university students. Emerging
scientists have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and the chance
to work with world-leading researchers in advanced physics science theory.
