Knowledge Mobilization Workshop Offers National Resource
Canadian University Partners Convene at TRIUMF

(Vancouver) – A key component of translating fundamental research into innovation is the confluence of diverse groups to co-create ideas and solutions for economic and societal benefits. On September 25th and 26th, TRIUMF and Advanced Applied Physics Solutions, Inc. (AAPS), a TRIUMF company, welcomed Canadian leaders in knowledge mobilization and technology transfer to its annual Innovations and Industrial Partnerships Workshop. 

This workshop engaged colleagues from TRIUMF’s member universities and other partners in a forum to discuss innovation practices and explore opportunities for leveraging research in order to effect positive social and economic impact on Canadian society. Through conduits like TRIUMF, researchers and industrial partners harness their combined expertise to face common challenges in areas of knowledge translation and innovation. 

With 18 member universities, TRIUMF brings faculty and students from across the country to leverage resources here in Vancouver. Expertise at TRIUMF ranges from engineering to detector and accelerator technology, from chemistry to particle physics. 

Jim Hanlon, President and CEO of AAPS, Inc. and Head of the Business and Administration Division of TRIUMF, noted, “The opportunity that this workshop gave to TRIUMF, its member universities, and partners is outstanding. Collectively, we brought people from these leading institutions from across the country to resolve common problems in the field of knowledge translation and mobilization. With strong presentations and participation of all attendees, we met our goal. TRIUMF brings people together, not just in science but in the field of technology and business as well. That’s our role as a national laboratory.”

Greg Caws, President and CEO of the BC Innovation Council said, “TRIUMF has a progressive innovation culture. From the top-down, it is peer-oriented, understanding, and competitive. It is looking at research with the intent to derive greater value and these results from TRIUMF have been fantastic.” 

Dr. David Phipps, Director of York University’s Knowledge Mobilization Unit led a case study. Other notable guest speakers included Greg Caws, President and CEO of the British Columbia Innovation Council, Peter Cowan, Principal of Northworks IP, and Oba Harding, Business Development Director of MITACS.

The workshop was co-hosted by TRIUMF and Advanced Applied Physics Solutions at TRIUMF located on the south campus of the University of British Columbia.
