Dear TRIUMF undergraduate supervisors,

After considerable consultation amongst the student program office, Reiner,  HR, and the ALDs, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the undergraduate student program for the summer term.   Effective immediately we will be rescinding all offers for the summer student work term, including students that were scheduled to continue their term into the summer.

That said, we decided further that these students will be offered first right of refusal if the "same job" is offered in any one of the Fall 2020, Winter 2021, or Summer 2021 terms.  We recognize that some jobs are project based and those projects might not be active in subsequent terms. If this is the case and you end up having a job where the description may be different that you requested for the summer term, we ask that you guarantee the affected summer student at least an interview for the job that you or your group does have.

We hope this measure will lessen the impact on these unfortunate students and as well help preserve TRIUMF’s reputation as a top-notch co-op employer.

Note that presently we still plan on recruiting in May for the fall term, but of course that may change in the coming weeks. We will start fresh (job postings, subsidies, etc.) with the next term, whenever it will be. Of course, you will be kept up to date on developments as they arise.

 We understand that each of you may have been thinking of alternate options for your summer student, but with the uncertainty of the situation (including e.g. uncertain start dates, travel and housing logistics for students, admin capacity during the crisis) and in fairness to all the summer hires and all supervisors as well, we are implementing the same decision for ALL summer student positions.

We expect that there will be many questions about this, so please do not hesitate to ask. I will never be too far from my laptop - my townhouse isn’t that big.
