As you know, Philip Lu has been promoted into Robert Henderson's<br>
position as Detectors Group Head.<br>
<br>
We are now moving forward with replacing him.<br>
<br>
Our thinking is this:<br>
<br>
We want someone to cover the detector engineering Philip did. At the<br>
same time we want to use the opportunity to plug some gaps we have in<br>
SciTech. <br>
<br>
The most glaring gap is that we do engineering, but without a<br>
PEng. This means for any safety or major work we have to find an<br>
external PEng to sign off and direct our work. It also makes it unclear<br>
if we can have EIT (Engineers in Training) since such people "must work<br>
directly under the supervision of a PEng".<br>
<br>
Secondly we are missing cryogenics expertise. Bit of a long shot to<br>
kill two birds with one stone, but we mention cryogenics as a plus.<br>
<br>
We also have to plan for Chapman's succession. We are unlikely to<br>
succeed with recruiting a scintillator shop manager with Chapman's<br>
experience and ability to take on new techniques, visiting companies,<br>
trade shows etc. figuring it all out. So we will emphasize we want an<br>
engineer who remains open and enthusiastic to new techniques.<br>
<br>
Please discuss within your departments, feel free to forward to others, <br>
give me feedback rapidly on these plans. We would like to start<br>
advertising within the next week or so. <br>
