on behalf of TRIUMF Outreach:

*(I)* We are looking for a physics/astronomy person to give a talk during
our Science Week (January 23 - January 27). The target audience is students
in grades 9 and 10 who will shortly be making big decisions about their
future field of studies. We are looking for someone who is
interesting/engaging/passionate etc. The talk could be about any area of
physics or astronomy, a general science topic or the presenter's field of
research, or some cool demonstrations. The speaker could be a
professor, a techie, or a grad student. The goal is to get the 15/16 year
old kids excited about science.

We have several time slots available, all in the week of January 23-January
27, 2017. They range in length from 40 minutes to 70 minutes.

a) during any lunch hour, from 11:35 to 12:20 (45 minutes, minus the
time to get students in/out)
          - in a classroom, about 30 students, self-selected

b) before lunch hour on Thurs, Jan26, from 10:30 to 11:35 (65 minutes,
minus the time to get students in/out)
-in our auditorium, 100+ students, classes accompanied by
teachers

c) after lunch Thursday, Jan 26 from 12:20 to 13:35 (75 minutes, minus
the time to get students in/out)
          - in our auditorium, 100+ students, classes accompanied by
teachers

*(II)* As part of the *Innovation 150 program* for Canada’s 150th
anniversary, the *Power of Ideas Tour *will be dropping by Terry Fox
Secondary School on *Thursday, February 2nd*. The school has designated a
large portion of its space for TRIUMF, and we will be having multiple
booths there to promote the physics that goes on at our lab. At the booths,
you will be either promoting the TRIUMF brand with our particle stickers
and photo-walk displays, amazing people from all demographics with our
exhilarating physics demos, or monitoring people as our Particle Twister
maestro!

We will need to get *3 -5 volunteers* to help out with the event, and this
will be a *full day commitment*, as the event takes pace in *Port
Coquitlam. *
We will be driving to the school around *12:00pm *to set up for the event,
running the event for *3:00pm - 9:00pm *(with scheduled breaks in-between),
and packing up everything until around *9:30pm*. We should then be heading
back to the main Vancouver area afterwards (we will be providing the
transport to and from the school).

Not only is this event is a great way to improve your science communication
skills and immerse yourself into the TRIUMF brand, as volunteers will be
rewarded with a TRIUMF T-shirt!

If you are interested in participating in any of these outreach events,
feel free to reach out to me on tours at triumf.ca !
