The University of the Western Cape (UWC) enjoys national and international acclaim for its continuing contribution to democratic change in South Africa and for making quality education accessible to all South Africans and developing centres of excellence of

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of the leading Departments in South Africa with a large post-graduate component. The Department concentrates on research in Nuclear Physics, Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nanoscience, and Physics Education.
Three SARChI research chairs, two in Astrophysics and one in Nuclear Science are based in the Department.

The Nuclear Physics group is actively involved in the fields of applied nuclear physics, nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics and fundamental symmetries, and has strong collaborations with iThemba LABS locally and several international projects, such
as those at CERN–ISOLDE and TRIUMF, and the nEXO neutrino-less double decay experiment.</p>
