Title: ROOT: A framework for data storage and analysis

Abstract: The ROOT system (http://root.cern.ch) is in constant development since many years at CERN. Based on the previous experience with its predecessor PAW, the development team is building a collection of libraries following the object orientation principles. ROOT includes classes to store a large amount of data in an efficient and system independent way. The data base is organized as a collection of objects to optimize the access time when queries are performed on a subset of these objects. The PROOF sub-system is designed to analyze many data sets in parallel using local cluster farms or distributed GRID resources. The library includes classes for histogramming, fitting, 2-D and3-D graphics, Graphical User Interface, detector geometries, sockets, threads, client-server, etc.The CINT C++ interpreter can be used as a rapid development tool. C++ instructions can be given at the command line or in scripts. The scripts can be compiled with a native compiler. The ROOT system has been ported to many platforms and compilers and is currently used by many experiments in High Energy or Nuclear Physics and also other fields like biology or finance.
