Title: First Observation of Doubly Charmed Baryons

Abstract: The Quantum Chromodynamics hadron spectrum includes doubly charmed baryons with valence quark structures: (ccd), (ccu), and (ccs), as well as ccc. The doubly charmed baryons provide a new window for understanding the structure of all baryons, including the most familiar baryons, protons (uud) and neutrons (udd). The SELEX experiment (E781) at Fermilab has two statistically compelling new high mass states near 3.5 GeV decaying to final state decay channels of the doubly charmed baryons (ccd) and (ccu). The masses are consistent with theoretical expectations, but the spectroscopy is surprising. The lifetimes are shorter than 30 fs. Plans are being made for a state-of-the-art doubly charmed baryon experiment at CERN COMPASS. References: M. Mattson et al. PRL 89 (2002) 112001, hep-ex/0209074, hep-ex/0212029.
