Title: Parity violation in e-p scattering: The "G0" and "Qweak" Experiments at JLAB

Abstract: Parity-violating (PV) electron-nucleon elastic scattering offers a unique opportunity to study the electroweak structure of the nucleon. This, in turn, can yield information about the strange quark sea at low energies, or provide precision tests of the Standard Model. In particular, the status of two PV electron-proton scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab will be discussed. The "G0" experiment, which completed a successful commissioning run and is presently entering the data-taking stage, aims to make a determination of the strange quark vector currents in the nucleon by measuring two "new" proton ground state matrix elements, G_e(Z) and G_m(Z), the vector weak "charge" and "magnetic" form factors. The "Qweak" experiment, presently in the design stage, aims to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model by carrying out a precision measurement of the proton's weak charge and determining the weak mixing angle sin^2(theta_W) at low energies.

TRIUMF Research Scientist candidate.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
