Title: Physics for the Birds

Abstract: Much of the anatomy and some behavior of birds can be explained by simple physical models: Can birds be smaller than bees? Why donut sea gulls die of cold feet? Why do pigeons rock their head when they walk? How do humming birds hover nearly motionless in midair? Could a human fly on his own muscle power? Does an owl have 2-D accuracy to pinpoint a mouse in the dark from the sound alone? In this talk I will try to answer these and other questions using mostly principles learned mostly in a first year University Physics course.

This general interest talk is part of the TRIUMF Users' Group Annual General Meeting. Anyone interested (whether registered or not) is welcome to attend.
