Title: Correlations in Finite Nuclei (What Does a Proton Do Inside the Nucleus)

Abstract: The experimental studies of spectral strength distribution performed during the last two decades have provided new and detailed information on nuclear structure. These results have been accompanied by several efforts in nuclear many-body theory and give a modern picture of the nucleus in which the independent particle model is valid only to a partial extent. Correlations beyond the mean field picture are due to short-range effects and to coupling between sp and collective motions, resulting in contributions to the binding energy and a relevant redistribution of spectral strength. The present knowledge of these effects allows us, for the first time, to know the behavior of EVERY nucleon in the system. This talk will review these results for finite systems and discuss recent calculations obtained with the self-consistent Green's function approach.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
