Title: Windows on the Dark Side of the Universe
Abstract: Recent cosmological observations indicate that the universe is made mostly of something other than ordinary matter: a clumping "dark matter", yet to be identified and a mysterious repelling "dark energy". Is this the ultimate Copernician revolution or a sign that we do not understand gravity and are building "epicycles" to fit an obsolete theoretical framework to increasingly accurate data?
After briefly reviewing the evidence for these dark components, I will discuss the current attempts to decipher their nature and show that they are indeed physical. I will desribe in particular the searches for the Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPS), a leading candidate for dark matter. I will present the results of our CDMS experiment [ref. astro-ph/0405033] which is currently leading the field, our short term plans and our propoosal for major expansion at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Laboratory.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
