Title: Description of neutrino-deuteron reaction based on standard nuclear physics approach and effective field theory

Abstract: We study the neutrino-deuteron reaction, motivated by the important experiment at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. Our theoretical framework is based on the standard nuclear physics approach in which we use nuclear wave functions based on a high-precision N-N potential and nuclear currents consisting of the impulse approximation current supplemented by meson-exchange currents. Meanwhile the neutrino-deuteron reaction has also been studied by some groups in terms of the effective field theory in which nuclear operators are derived from an effective Lagrangian; the Lagrangian is written in terms of effective degrees of freedom in the system, and is the most general one as long as the assumed symmetries are satisfied. Both approaches give essentially the same cross sections. I compare the two frameworks applied to the neutrino-deuteron reaction and discuss the results. I also discuss a relation between the two frameworks from the viewpoint of the renormalization group.
