Title: Physics Meets Philosophy: A Question of Space(time)

Abstract: In this talk I will consider certain historical and contemporary responses to the question, "What is space(time)?" The views of Leibniz, Newton, Kant and Poincare will be presented, as will those of contemporary philosophers of science Howard Stein and Robert DiSalle. The various responses will help to highlight: first the weaknesses of both the rationalist and the empiricist approach to knowing the world; second, how our theoretical objects (such as the geometric structure of spacetime) can be justified as more than a conventional choice; and third, (and most importantly) what it is, exactly, that our theories of spacetime tell us about the natural world.
