Title: Testing high-order corrections in QED with Ortho-positronium
Abstract: Positronium, the electron-positron bound state, is the lightest
and simplest bound state. This purely leptonic system is bound and
self-annihilates through the electromagnetic interaction. Thus, it is an
ideal system to investigate and test the established theory of quantum
electrodynamics (QED). Precise measurements of the lifetime of the triplet
state, ortho-positronium, may be used to examine the higher-order
corrections in the theoretical decay rate. A new experimental technique that
utilizes the angular distributions of the decay photons has been used to
investigate the ortho-positronium decay rate. This experiment and its results
will be the main focus of my presentation. Using ortho-positronium to search
for evidence of mirror worlds, extra dimensions, C and CPT violating QED
decays will also be briefly discussed.
