Title: First Results from the G-Zero Experiment

Abstract: The "G0" experiment at Jefferson Lab aims to make a determination of the "strange" quark currents in the proton. Two "new" proton ground state properties will be measured which are sensitive to "strange" quarks and hence to the quark-antiquark sea in the proton. The matrix elements of interest are the elastic scattering weak "charge" and "magnetic" form factors, G_e(Z) and G_m(Z), respectively. By measuring the very small parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton scattering at momentum transfers between 0.1 and 1.0 GeV2, and combining these asymmetries with previously measured electromagnetic form factors, "new" information about the proton weak form factors, and therefore the "strange" quark currents, can be obtained. This high precision experiment has recently completed the first-phase "forward angle" measurements, and is preparing for the second-phase "backward angle" measurements. The recently released "forward angle" data will be presented.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
