Title: The Pierre Auger Observatory: A Description, Status, and First Results

Abstract: The Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO), currently under construction in Malargue, Argentina, detects cosmic rays with energies above ~10e18 eV. The observatory employs both air fluorescence telescopes and a ground-based array of water Cherenkov detectors to measure the extended air showers produced by these ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The primary physics goals of the PAO include measuring the cosmic ray energy spectrum in the vicinity of the so-called "GZK cut-off" (approximately 5 x 10e19 eV), searching for astrophysical sources of these cosmic rays, and determining their composition. In this talk, I will explain the detection techniques used by the observatory, describe the current status of the construction, and present the first physics results obtained by the PAO.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
