Title: Transfer Reactions and the Structure of Nuclei

Abstract: The way hadronic matter arranges itself to form the atomic nuclei, that constitute most of the accessible matter in our world, is a subject of continuing interest and study. The shell structure, that forms the basis of much of our understanding of nuclei, can perhaps best be explored by nucleon-adding or nucleon-removing transfer reactions. It has recently become increasingly clear that these shells are shifting as one moves away from the most stable and best studied regions. Some of this work will be discussed. Nuclei are quasi-manybody systems that also exhibit coherent properties, and transfer reactions are useful in exploring the extent to which pairs of nucleons form a BCS sea of bosons, analogous to electron pairs in superconductivity. Transfer reactions can also provide calibrations of the structure of nuclei important to studies where nuclear processes that test the physics inherent in processes such as neutrinoless double beta decay. With new facilities providing intense, energetic beams of short-lived nuclei away from stability, new techniques are needed to optimize the study this class of reactions.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk. Please note the unusual time.
