Title: Searching for Excited-State Double-Beta Decays of Ge-76

Abstract: Fundamental questions about the nature of the neutrino persist to this day. Two such questions are whether the neutrino is a Majorana or Dirac particle and what is the absolute mass of the neutrino. A search for neutrinoless double-beta decay may simultaneously answer both of these questions. The Majorana collaboration will look for this decay using an array of enriched germanium radiation detectors. The half life of Ge-76 is related to the mass of the neutrino via nuclear matrix elements calculated using theoretical approaches. Measuring the half life of two neutrino double-beta decays to an excited state of the daughter nucleus can provide direction for the calculation of these nuclear matrix elements. The sensitivity of the Majorana detector to the excited-state decays will be discussed, as well as backgrounds, background reduction, and simulation verification.
