Title: New Science with New Scattering Instrumentation
Abstract: New neutron scattering instrumentation based on the time-of-flight of the
neutron are opening up unprecedented opportunities for condensed matter
and materials physics studies. The new instrumentaion seeks to "tag"
every neutron scattered from an interesting crystal with its angle of
deflection and speed. In turn this data is analysed to allow electronic
spin and atomic structure and dynamics to be unravelled in exotic
materials. This renaissance in new science with new instrumentation is
expected to reach a new height with the imminent start-of-operation at the
Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
I will discuss these new neutron scattering techniques using
examples drawn from my group's recent work on geometrically frustrated
magnets such as the pyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7, and the two dimensional quantum
spin system SrCu2(BO3)2.
Stimulants will be available 15 minutes before the talk. Please note the unusual time.
