Title: Exploration of Collective Structure in Nuclei

Abstract: The rare earth nuclei with 90 neutrons (N = 90) mark one of the most rapid changes in nuclear collectivity. Often described as “soft” due to the appearance of low-lying quadrupole oscillations (labeled beta- and gamma-vibrations) upon which rotational bands are built, the N = 90 nuclei are a challenge for collective nuclear models to adequately describe. However, recent experimental studies of 150Nd, 152Sm, and 154Gd by a variety of experimental techniques reveal signatures of shape coexistence, rather than the multi-
phonon states that would be expected in soft (vibrational) nuclei. This new interpretation of shape coexistence is being tested through systematic studies of the N = 90 isotones, 156Dy, 158Er, and 160Yb, using the 8pi at ISAC. These new studies provide critical data on very weak, low-energy gamma-ray transitions and electric monopole (E0) transitions, which are necessary to explore the evolution and mixing of band structures in this transitional region.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
