Title: Preparing the AGOR-facility for the future

Abstract: The main characteristics of the superconducting cyclotron AGOR, which is operational at the KVI since 1996, will be described and its performance will be analyzed.

Since the beginning of 2006 the experimental programme at the facility is going through a transition from nuclear structure and few body physics to the physics of fundamental interactions, causing a large change in the requirements the machine has to meet: in order to produce a sufficiently intense beam of low energy radioactive ions a primary beam of 10 - 40 MeV per nucleon heavy ions with an intensity of several p?A and a beampower of up to 1 kW is needed. The on-going upgrade of the facility to reach these objectives will be discussed in detail.

Changes in the funding of the facility have triggered actions to attract new users outside the traditional community. This has led to a rapidly expanding programme to develop and validate instruments and experimental methods for future planetary missions of the European Space Agency. Some examples of this work will be discussed in brief.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
