Title: Rubidium Polarization Diagnostics for the TRINAT Atom Trap

Abstract: In 2004 and 2005, the TRINAT group trapped rubidium-80 from ISAC to measure the spin asymmetry of the recoiling daughter nuclei produced in its pure Gamow-Teller beta decay. This asymmetry vanishes in the Standard Model, and as such a nonzero asymmetry would be evidence for new physics. I will describe the process by which the rubidium nuclei
were polarized and two independent methods for measuring that polarization. In one method, the atomic physics of the polarization process is monitored and compared to a simulation to find the final polarization. This method can be made more precise in principle, but is subject to a number of systematic effects that the other method is insensitive to. The other method observes the beta particle in back-to-back detectors to measure the beta asymmetry, which has a well-known relationship to the nuclear polarization. This method is less precise, but should be sensitive to far fewer systematic
effects. Results from both of these methods will be shown and compared, and possible explanations for their discrepancy explored.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
