Title: Heat Losses Analysis of Cryo-System for the SCRF Electron Gun Experiment at BNL

Abstract: Cryogenic system was developed to operate SC RF cavity at 1.8 K. The SCRF cavity serves as an electron injector for the future electron-cooling of RHIC @ BNL.

Thermodynamic analysis of the entire cryo-system (500 liter LHe Dewar – Transfer Line – Cryostat) revealed all possible sources of heat losses.

Some of these sources appeared to be unexpectedly negligible and some unexpectedly significant. Major sources of LHe losses were identified and quantified.

The analysis prompted the way the existing cryo-system should be modified to reduce heat losses. Process Optimization of the entire cryo-system prompted optimal operating parameters.

Temperature and flow measurements done during cooldown tests of the modified cryostat proved the heat loss analysis predictions.

The improvements resulted in reducing helium boil-off of about an order of magnitude and significant increase of time available for experiment at 2K.

The system is used now as part of Energy Recovery Linac – a prototype for the future “e-RHIC”
