Title: Modern Prospects in Nuclear Chemistry: An Interdisciplinary Approach

Abstract: In the days when radioactivity was just beginning to be understood and even the existence of the nucleus was uncertain, scientists used their knowledge of both chemistry and physics to unravel the puzzles of atomic and nuclear structure. Today we are facing new significant and challenging problems which also require cross-disciplinary skills and teamwork to solve. In this respect, some examples from nuclear astrophysics, advanced (nuclear) fuel cycle, radioactive ion beam development, actinide chemistry, transmutation, isotope production, as well as applied nuclear analytical methods will be discussed. The talk will present a more general view of nuclear chemistry, and point out some examples of research directions with great excitement for current and future students.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk. The speaker is a candidate for a professorship in the SFU chemistry department.
