Title: First Attempts at Antihydrogen Trapping in ALPHA

Abstract: Antihydrogen is of fundamental interest because of the potential for performing both precision tests of CPT and gravitational studies of neutral antimatter. Low energy (sub eV) antihydrogen was synthesized at the CERN Antiproton Decelerator in 2002 by the ATHENA and ATRAP experiments. The next milestone in this evolving field is to trap the neutral anti-atoms so that they can be studied via laser spectroscopy.

The ALPHA experiment (successor to ATHENA) is designed to trap antihydrogen atoms in a minimum-B configuration. The antihydrogen is produced by merging plasmas of positrons and antiprotons in a cryogenic Penning trap. In this seminar, I will describe the design and operation of the ALPHA apparatus, and I will discuss the first attempts at trapping antihydrogen in this device.

Note the unusual time. Coffees will be served at 10:45.
