Title: Overview of the Radon EDM Experiment

Abstract: The discovery of a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) will provide evidence of physics beyond the standard model, including a new source of CP violation in the universe. Theories of Physics Beyond the Standard Model allow for EDMs orders of magnitude larger than those produced in the Standard Model alone. Thus even null results for EDM measurements constrain the allowed parameter space new theories. EDM experiments are under way in a variety of systems from fundamental particles to molecules, each with their own advantages and sensitivities to fundamental CP-violating interactions. The current best limits on a variety of CP-violating parameters are derived from the 199Hg measurement, which quotes a limit of |d_Hg | < 2.10 × 10−28 e · cm. As they are both diamagnetic atoms, 199Hg and 223Rn are sensitive to the same set of the possible CP-violating fundamental interactions, but the octupole deformation of the 223Rn nucleus enhances its sensitivity to these parameters relative to 199 Hg. The RadonEDM collaboration aims to measure the 223Rn EDM with enough sensitivity to improve on the 199Hg limits. In the first phase of the experiment the EDM will be measured using pulsed NMR techniques and detection of the free precession of 223Rn using a ring of TIGRESS gamma-ray detectors. A method for measuring the precession frequency through β -detection is under development.

Stimulants will be available 15 minutes before the talk.
