Date/Time: Wed 2009-03-04 at 14:00

Location: Auditorium

Speaker: Josef Hormes (Canadian Light Source)

Title: The Canadian Light Source 2009: a status report and a look into the future

Abstract: More than 20 years after the first proposal, the Canadian Light Source (CLS), a synchrotron radiation user facility based on a 2.9 GeV storage ring was funded in 1999 and the facility that was built in Saskatoon was officially opened in October of 2004 after the first light was detected in December of 2004! The $ 173 M project is the largest science project in Canada after WW II. Directly connected to the funding was the obligation of establishing a special industrial program with a final goal of 25% industrial use of the total beamtime!

Today, the CLS has 7 fully operational beamlines from “phase I” covering the spectral range from the IR to the hard X-ray region. 7 more beamlines from phase II are in the final stage of commissioning and will be open for general users by mid 2009. In phase III that has just started, 6 more beamlines will be built and proposals for phase IV have just been submitted.

In the first part of this talk, the status of the facility, the current characteristics of the machine and the various beamlines, and the status of the industrial program will be discussed and some of the results obtained until now will be presented. In the second part ideas for the future development of the CLS, including upgrades of the machine and the beamlines, and the development of an “in house” research program will be discussed in some detail.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
