Title: The data readout system of T2K Fine Grained Detector

Abstract: T2K Fine Grain Detector was designed as an active target where neutrinos interact and produce particles that are recorded. The FGD consists of 2 independent detectors, with a total of 8448 scintillator bars readout by a combination of wavelength shifting fibers and Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPC). The signals from the MPPCs are continuously stored in switched arrays of capacitors. Upon receiving a trigger, the analog data are digitized and shipped to a Field Programmable Gate Array for storage in external memory on 24 dedicated Crate Master Boards. The data is then shipped through optical links to 6 Data Concentrator Cards. Managing the data flow through the CMB to the DCCs and then further along to a dedicated PC is a challenge. One event captured on the 24 CMBs amount to 16 MB. In order to achieve the desired event rate of 20Hz, the data must be reduced on the CMBs by running a pulse finder and then shipping the truncated data to the DCC's. In this seminar, I will describe the architecture of the FGD digital readout system and show how the various tasks are handled by firmware in FPGAs and software in dedicated processors.

Please bring your own lunch.
