Title: The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams: The Facility and its Science

Abstract: This talk will describe the status and current conceptual design for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, FRIB. The underlying physics goals will also be discussed and how they drive the specifications of the facility. The novel feature of the FRIB concept is production, in-flight separation, and reacceleration of rare isotope beams. This promises to provide access to isotopes of elements that are normally difficult to produce at ISOL-based facilities such as ISAC. The FRIB facility will also be able to produce nuclei along the neutron drip line up to around mass 100, and nuclei in the r-process with N=126. The implications of some of these possibilities will be discussed. The talk will include a broad overview of science of rare isotopes and some of the challenges to realize the scientific opportunities.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
