Title: Studying Neutron Stars through X-ray Spectroscopy

Abstract: Neutron stars, the incredibly dense remnants of massive stars, compress matter to higher densities than can be studied anywhere else in the universe at similar temperatures. Measuring their exterior properties can enlighten us about the behavior of matter in their cores, both by measuring the size of the neutron star and by constraining their cooling rates. I will discuss observations of both old, transiently accreting neutron stars and of the youngest known neutron star (in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A), that constrain the behavior of matter at high densities.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
