Title: Production of 99Mo/99mTc: Canada's Role, TRIUMF's Role

Abstract: Tc-99m is used in greater than 80% of all nuclear medicine procedures throughout the world. The precursor Mo-99 is presently produced in 5 reactors around the world via thermal neutron fission of U-235. All of these reactors are >40 years old with the 2 that produce more than 70% being >50 years. Recent water leaks in these 2 reactors and the probability of being permanently shutdown sometime over the next 5 years interest in the use of accelerators as the method of choice has gained attention. With TRIUMF being Canada's laboratory for accelerator physics several proposals have been put forth that have the potential of alleviating the situation if not solving the problem for Canada and perhaps the world. This talk will provide the background as well as explore the options.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
