Title: Synthetic Paths to the Heaviest Elements
Abstract: A review of recent developments in heavy element science is given with emphasis on the chemistry of the heaviest elements. The synthesis of new heavy nuclei is studied with detailed examination of the capture cross sections, the fusion probability Pcn, and the survival probability, Wsur, with attention to the isospin dependence of these quantities. The use of radioactive beams for forming new heavy nuclei is modeled, with the conclusion that such beams are unlikely to be of importance in the synthesis of new chemical elements but can lead to exciting new opportunities in studies of nuclear structure and the atomic physics and chemistry of the heaviest elements. New experiments related to the use of damped collisions to form new isotopes of the heaviest nuclei are discussed.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
