Title: Bridging the gap: fermions in nuclear and atomic physics

Abstract: In this talk I plan to describe two projects I have recently completed. One is the study of weakly coupled particles in a harmonic trap and the other has to do with strongly coupled particles in a periodic box. The former is of relevance to nuclear physics: using insights from the many-body theory of the weakly interacting two-component Fermi gas, we have proposed a new 3-body operator and attempted to understand its ramifications. The latter is directly related to experiments with ultracold atoms: we have performed new simulations to calculate the ground-state energy of fermions at unitarity, and used these results to extend our understanding of energy functionals. A connecting thread between the two problems (apart from the fermionic nature of the particles) is the methodology: in both cases we've used Quantum Monte Carlo to either constrain or compare with Density Functional Theory calculations.
