Title: Excited meson spectroscopy and transitions from lattice QCD

Abstract: I will discuss recent progress in calculating excited meson spectra and radiative transition rates using lattice QCD, highlighting some novel techniques and emphasising results and their interpretation. Work in the light meson sector will be presented where we have extracted a very extensive spectrum, including many states with exotic quantum numbers and, for the first time in such a calculation, spin-four states. I will mention some early results on mapping out the energy-dependent phase shift in pi-pi scattering and also describe some calculations of radiative transitions rates in the charmonium sector, highlighting results for exotic states and phenomenological interpretations. I will conclude with some comments on future prospects.
