Location: Auditorium

Speaker: Dr. Jeffrey Joyce (Critical Systems Labs Inc.)

Title: Lessons Learned about Machine Protection at CERN

Abstract: In 2009 and 2010, the speaker and his colleagues performed technical audits of two systems that are integral elements of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) approach to machine protection at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. This presentation discusses lessons learned from this experience combined with other experiences in safety-critical systems across a wide variety of technical domains including aerospace, automotive, defence, rail signalling and medical technology. These lessons are applicable in a general way to accelerator technology as well as technology in other domains such as medical devices that involve the use of programmable functionality. This presentation also describes some on-going interactions with CERN that involve the use of advanced methods of systems/software engineering based on mathematical logic.

Dr. Jeffrey Joyce is the co-founder of a Vancouver-based engineering consultancy, Critical Systems Labs Inc., that specializes in the specification, analysis and verification of software-intensive critical functionality. With projects in Europe, North America and Asia, Dr. Joyce and his colleagues have earned an international reputation as thought leaders in the discipline of system/software safety. He earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cambridge University in 1990 with earlier degrees from the University of Calgary and the University of Waterloo. He is registered as a Professional Engineer in B.C. and was certified in 2009 as a TÜV safety engineer. In 2006, Dr. Joyce was named "Engineer of the Year" by the International System Safety Society.
