Title: In-source spectroscopy and trace-analysis of actinide elements - applications of resonance ionization mass spectrometry

Abstract: Laser Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) uses the individual
electron structure of each element and isotope in combination with
conventional mass-spectrometers to provide an outstanding elemental and
isotope selective ionization and separation. This high selectivity in
combination with a high overall efficiency allow for in-source
spectroscopic investigations on exotic radionuclides as well as sensitive
ultra trace detection of elemental species.
The principles of resonant laser ionization and their applications
investigated at Mainz University will be presented and discussed. Ongoing
spectroscopic investigations which are carried out as a prerequisite for
detection of the low lying isomeric state in Th-229 as well as the
detection of actinide elements with highest sensitivity demonstrate the
capabilities of resonant laser ionization for various and challenging
applications.
