Title: Digital signal processing for nuclear decay studies

Abstract: Digital signal processing brings a number of advantages for nuclear experiments. Systems are compact, efficient, and versatile. Furthermore, additional physics information can be extracted from the recorded pulse shapes. The UT/ORNL digital acquisition system, based on the XIA Pixie-16 module, has been used in a wide variety of physics experiments each harnessing different advantages of digital signal processing. These applications include detecting fast (<10 microseconds) alpha decays of the heaviest elements using the selective on-board triggering of the modules to extract precision timing and position information from recorded trace shapes in scintillators. These digital systems also provide a platform with near-zero dead times and sizable throughputs which are vital for high rate physics experiments as will be discussed.

Stimulants will be available 15 minutes before the talk.
