Title: Greenhouse extinctions - chemical evidence for the most common kind of extinctions in the geological past

Abstract: New breakthroughs in biomarker research, coupled with carbon isotope work indicates that most of the past mass extinctions were longer term events. The one exception appears to be the extinction at the end of the Cretaceous, which was impact caused. In this talk the sum of biomarker and chemical evidence supporting this hypothesis will be presented. In particular, the mass extinctions at the end of the Devonian, Permian, and Triassic Periods all can be linked to global warming from flood basalt volcanism.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk. FPInnovations Paprican is located at 3800 Wesbrook Mall, just north of TRIUMF.
