Title: The DAEdALUS and IsoDAR experiments: adventures in neutrino physics with high-power cyclotrons

Abstract: The DAEdALUS and IsoDAR experiments address neutrino-physics topics of great current interest. DAEdALUS explores CP violation in the neutrino sector by careful measurement of oscillation parameters from neutrinos arising from the decay of pions and muons in a configuration where the parent particles stop prior to emitting neutrinos (DAFR - Decay At Rest). 800 MeV protons at high power (up to 8 MW peak) strike a target to produce pions in the delta-resonance region. The experiment relies on three identical sources at different distances from a large detector with large quantities of hydrogen (water-Cherenkov or liquid scintillator), distances of each station to the detector are chosen to maximize oscillation effects. The experiment measures appearance of electron antineutrinos (absent from the production spectrum) via Inverse Beta Decay from capture by protons in the detector. Cyclotron chain consists of an Injector cyclotron at 60 MeV/amu (10 particle milliamps peak current) feeding an 800 MeV/amu superconducting ring cyclotron. High currents are achieved by accelerating H2+ ions, reducing effects of space charge at low energies, and enabling stripping extraction to minimize beam loss. The IsoDAR experiment uses the beam from the Injector Cyclotron to produce 8-Li as an electron antineutrino source for studying very short baseline oscillations arising from mixing with sterile neutrino states. The background for the experiments will be discussed by Dr. Alonso, Dr. Calabretta will present technical details of the accelerator systems.

Coffee and Donuts are available 15 minutes before the talk.
