Title: A description of clustering in light nuclei

Abstract: In light nuclei we observe some states that are difficult to describe on the basis of the mean field.
Cluster states or halo nuclei are such examples. In cluster models particular degrees of freedom
are activated while the other degrees are mostly frozen. Three topics related to the clustering
are discussed. The first one is the two-neutron halo structure of 11Li. Its basic properties are
reasonably well understood within a 9Li+n + n three-cluster model. To be more realistic, the
distortion effect of the 9Li core is investigated by describing 9Li with +3H+n + n cluster model.
The second is concerned with the ground and first excited 0+ states of 16O. Because they show
shell-cluster competitive characters that are different from each other, a unified description of them
is a long-standing problem. An attempt at reproducing both of them is shown in a 12C+p+p+n+n
model where the four valence nucleons are constrained not to occupy the orbits of 12C. The third
example is to demonstrate that some excited states of 4He can be better understood as cluster
states in a fully microscopic model with realistic interactions. The basis functions used here are
so versatile that they can easily be adapted to continuum problems such as reactions and strength
functions for various operators.
