Title: Chiral Effective Field Theory for Nuclear Forces:
The Path to Nuclear Structure from First Principles
Abstract: Chiral effective field theory (EFT) is a model-independent method for analyzing the low-energy properties of QCD. During the past two decades, it has been proven to be a particularly powerful tool in dealing with nuclear forces in a systematic way. Two-, three-, and four-nucleon forces have been derived up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) and beyond. Applications of these forces in nuclear few- and many-body systems show a great deal of success in explaining nuclear structure and reactions from first principles. In this game, a pivotal role is played by the three-nucleon force---a very subtle and diverse object. The struggle to unmask this obscure player has taken center stage. After 80+ years of effort, victory cannot be claimed unless we pin down this component of the nuclear force.
