Title: Off-Line Electromagnetic Mass Separation for the Production of a RadioTherapeutic Isotope:Technical Aspects

Abstract: The US Department of Energy has funded a proof-of-principle project to investigate the production of high specific activity, Sm-153, a radioactive isotope used to treat bone cancer. This agent is currently marketed under the trade name, Quadramet, and has demonstrated reasonable efficacy. Sm-153 is produced using neutron irradiation of enriched Sm-152, but at most only 2% of the target material is converted to the desired isotope with neutron flux of ~10e14 n/s/cm2. This dilutes the effectiveness of this therapeutic agent and limits its usefulness due to competitive pharmacological behavior of non-radioactive Sm-152 with the therapeutic congener Sm-153. Isotopes of the same element cannot be separated by chemical means, however, mass spectrometric separation can be used. The talk will discuss the technical aspects how this project could have been conducted using the TRIUMF/AAPS Isotope Test Separator Facility located in the Proton Hall Annex and how a successful result could be a breakthrough study both for the off-line technique to produce higher purity therapeutic agents and the usefulness of this key radio-therapeutic isotope.
