Title: Two neutron radioactivity and other results from the Modular Neutron Array

Abstract: The MoNA (Modular Neutron Array) at NSCL/MSU was built to study the decay of neutron-unbound states in exotic, light to medium-mass nuclei (A ~ 5 - 30) near and beyond the neutron dripline. These studies are relevant to a variety of active topics in modern nuclear physics, including the evolution of shell structure away from stability; formation of clusters and halos in light nuclei; and exotic decay modes such as dineutron emission. Additionally, MoNA is well equipped to detect neutrons emitted from excited prefragments in heavy-ion collisions, which can provide experimental constraints on the nuclear equation of state. In this colloquium, I will first give a general overview of how experiments with MoNA are performed and analyzed. Then I will discuss some recent results, in particular focusing on three topics: 1) mapping the boundaries of the "island of inversion" by study of neutron-rich fluorine; 2) the first observation of ground state dineutron decay from beryllium-16 and strong hints at dineutron radioactivity in oxygen-26; and 3) constraining the symmetry energy term of the nuclear equation of state by study of heavy-ion collisions involving radioactive beams.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
