Title: The neutron electric dipole moment experiment at TUM

Abstract: Since the 1950's people search for electric dipole moments (EDM) of fundamental systems, an unambiguous manifestation of parity (P) and time reversal symmetry (T) violation. Assuming the conservation of CPT, T violation in a fundamental system also means CP violation. This has only been observed in very few systems in the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) and is not sufficient to describe the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. With a long history of improvements by many orders of magnitude over the last decades, the upper limit for an EDM of the neutron, dn < 2.9 · 10-26 e·cm, already restricts many theories for physics beyond the SM. At the FRM-II reactor we are currently setting up a new approach with a projected sensitivity of 10-28 e.cm, probing physics well beyond the reach of the LHC. To reach this 100 times improved statistical accuracy, the strongest possible source of ultra-cold neutrons is needed. Understanding systematic effects on this level further requires unprecedented control of small magnetic fields and large electric fields. In this seminar I will give an overview of the ongoing development and implementation of this apparatus, including the realization of the smallest extended size magnetic field on earth.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
