Title: Exploring Target and Ion Source Concepts: From Nano Particles to Giant Resonances

Abstract: In 1951 fast neutrons were brought to interaction with an uranium target at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen and for the first time isotopes of Kr and Rb were extracted and electromagnetically separated – the ISOL method was born. 63 years later uranium compounds are still among the reference target materials for this method, now incorporated into de-novo engineered advanced materials and brought to interaction with a range of high-energy particles at different facilities world-wide. At ISOLDE-CERN a number of systematic studies have been performed in recent years leading to a novel nano-structured target matrix that is producing increased isotope intensities and exhibits an enhanced thermal stability at the same time. Coupled to new target and ion source concepts, such as advanced proton-to-neutron converter geometries or selective ion sources, rare isotope beams of higher purity and intensity become available. An overview of recent developments at ISOLDE will be given and their applicability to ISAC and photo fission targets will be touched upon in selected examples.

Dr. Gottberg is a candidate for "ARIEL target physicist"
