Title: Nuclear Weapons: From Beginning to End(?)

Abstract: An overview of the nuclear arms race will be presented with emphasis on its history from inception to the present. Discussions about preventing proliferation and further use started in the secrecy of the Manhattan project for many of the atomic scientists. They continued in public into the present era of gradual arms control and the visionary call for abolition of nuclear weapons. The fact that the atomic scientists were only partially heeded is evident from the rapid cold war buildup followed by a slow decline in the numbers of nuclear weapons through arms control treaties. The central role of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty as well as issues with Iran and North Korea will be presented. As time allows, impediments to arms control such as rapid launch deployment, weapon and delivery system modernization, and US-Russian tensions will be discussed. A personal outlook for the future will be presented.
