Title: The REDTOP project: Rare Eta Decays with a Tpc for Optical Photons

Abstract: The eta meson is almost unique in the particle universe for its quantum numbers as they match those of the vacuum (except for P and CP). The fact that the eta has no charges will expose any decay violating a conservation law without interfering with a corresponding current. The integrated eta meson samples collected by various experiments in the past is of the order of 10^8 events, limiting considerably the search for such rare decays. A new experiment: REDTOP, is being proposed at the proton booster of Fermilab with the intent of collecting 10^12 triggers/year and studying rare eta decays. The physics potential, the accelerators system and the detector of REDTOP will be discussed during the colloquium.
